It holds more than the picture shows. Between 10 and 20 depending on the thickness. It is not our main storage for books but it can definately handle a set of books by theme or our current favorties.

The number of books that can fit really depends on how thick your books are. The usable depth of the book bin is 3", and most books can fit two across. For children's books with about 30 pages or so, you should easily fit 6-8 at one time; more if they are soft-covered, magazines or comic books, fewer if they are board books, text books or novels.
