It holds quite a few. Depending on the size of the books. Right now my daughters have at least 7 or 8 on there and that includes mostly large picture-style children's books from the library.

The number of books that can fit really depends on how thick your books are. The usable depth of the book bin is 3", and most books can fit two across. For children's books with about 30 pages or so, you should easily fit 6-8 at one time; more if they are soft-covered, magazines or comic books, fewer if they are board books, text books or novels.
